Apple is evaluating an earlier release for the iPhone 16 lineup in South Korea, according to a report from the Korea Times. If true, this would represent a notable shift in Apple’s release strategy, as South Korea has traditionally not been among Apple’s initial launch countries.

Sources cited by the Korea Times (via MacRumors) suggest that Apple is preparing for a mid-September launch of the iPhone 16 series, with the announcement likely slated for Tuesday, September 10. This date aligns with Apple’s historical pattern of hosting its September event shortly after Labor Day. However, preparations are reportedly underway to facilitate an earlier release in South Korea.

Typically, despite the iPhone’s robust market presence in South Korea, new models have been introduced there weeks after their debut in other regions. This delay has often been attributed to Apple’s stringent confidentiality measures and South Korea’s rigorous certification requirements. All electronic devices in South Korea must receive certification from the National Radio Research Agency, and any information about these devices is made public on the agency’s website, potentially leading to early leaks of new iPhone specifications.

The report says “It seems like Apple has now reached a conclusion that it is maintaining consumer preferences in the Korean market, and that means it could be reasonable for the company to consider early sales marketing and bring positive impact on its global sales campaign.”

Nevertheless, it appears that Apple may be reevaluating its strategy for the South Korean market. The decision comes in response to a significant drop in Apple’s market share in China, which fell to 14% in the second quarter of this year, down from 16% the previous year. This decline has pushed Apple out of the top five smartphone vendors in China, creating an opportunity for the company to shift focus and inventory to other markets, such as South Korea.

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 16 lineup is expected to retain a design similar to the iPhone 15 series, but with notable updates, such as a new capacitive button on the side for capturing photos and videos. The Pro models are rumored to feature slightly larger displays, with the iPhone 16 Pro boasting a 6.3-inch screen and the Pro Max a 6.9-inch screen.
