OpenAI

Nvidia and Apple are reportedly considering investments in OpenAI’s upcoming fundraising round. The AI company, known for its ChatGPT chatbot, could be valued at a staggering $100 billion in this new round. According to The New York Times, Thrive Capital, an existing OpenAI investor, is likely to lead the deal. Bloomberg first reported Nvidia’s involvement, while The Wall Street Journal revealed Apple’s potential interest. Microsoft, which already holds a 49% stake in OpenAI, may also participate in the funding round.

Kyle Wiggers for TechCrunch:

OpenAI needs capital. Its annualized revenue reportedly eclipsed $3.4 billion early this year, but it’s said to be on track to lose $5 billion by year end as it expands its AI training and staffing efforts.

OpenAI has ties to both companies. It runs and trains its generative AI models primarily on Nvidia GPUs; meanwhile Apple earlier this year agreed to integrate ChatGPT into iOS as part of Apple’s forthcoming suite of AI features, Apple Intelligence.

MacDailyNews Take: It makes sense for Apple to get more involved in OpenAI, especially as its ChatGPT is a tentpole of Apple Intelligence. In July, both Apple and Microsoft dropped potential OpenAI board seats amid antitrust scrutiny, so backing the AI firm is the next best thing to having a seat at the table.
